The lotus effect or the Teflon pan are typical associations when it comes to non-stick properties. However, the range of thermally sprayed non-stick coatings extends far beyond this – with numerous applications in the printing and paper industries, for example. The non-stick sealers are just as diverse as the possible applications: they play a decisive role in giving thermally sprayed coatings the desired non-stick properties.
The requirements for roll coatings in the paper industry are diverse. Different areas of application such as smoothing or calender rolls, coating rolls, chill rolls or dryer group rolls require different requirements, especially for the thermal spray layer and the sealer. We have developed a silicone sealer for a customer, which is used on large calender rolls. The non-stick effect provided by the silicone ensures low adhesion of dirt and enables a long, fault-free operating time for the roller.
Thermal spraying is used in mechanical seals to improve the wear resistance, corrosion resistance and thermal resistance of the sealing surfaces. Tungsten carbide, chromium oxide or aluminium oxide are usually used in combination with heat-resistant non-stick sealants to optimize the friction between the mechanical seal ring and the seal. At our customer’s request, we have developed a silicone sealant with PTFE that meets the requirements and is used in series production for mechanical seal coatings.
